What was the motivating factor behind choosing Royal Lytham and St Annes to re-create?

It All Started with links 2003 on PC and a Design by a Guy called Bill Bunning. I’ve always loved links golf and was amazed by the design, played it so much became my favourite Course. It was one of my first designed courses on ps4 and the plan was to design the great British links courses of Lytham, Troon, Muirfield, Hoylake, Birkdale, Royal St Georges and Carnoustie (only 4 of the 7 done). At the time of designing it there wasn’t enough people designing real courses in my view and I just thought the great British links needed doing on the GNCD.

What was the hardest aspect of the course to re-create?

Well designing on console is never easy compared when you watch people design on PC, with the slight delay always harder to get something how you want it. But to me when designing a links course is trying to make the course so bunkers come into play like links golf. I find so many courses there is bunkers there but no chance of going in them. How the GNCD is, it is impossible to design proper links bunkers, so making them look right and playable I found very tricky to do. The Bunkers with the sun behind them look a lot more realistic with the shade, etc, but you can’t do them all like that so some look a lot better than others. Another problem I had is the course is located in a housing estate and with the designer taking a bit hit when you use a lot of houses, to get the feeling the course is correct plus the railway tracks, which took hours to do, really can only be seen in 2 or 3 shots.

What is your favourite hole on the course?

Not got a favourite hole really. I think the run of holes 7, 8 and 9, one a par 3, other a par 4 and a Par 5 play really good and look great in the game. In my view every course should have a short par 4 and the 13th in my design is a 300 yard par 4, where in real life its a 361 yard hole and in testing in my view played a lot better as a short par 4.

What’s next?

Well I changed jobs at the end of last year and with my new job I have no time now for designing. I’m not good with the designer and its takes me ages to get something that looks ok and I’m happy with, I’m Slowly updating Troon for this years open event in the highland theme and textures. Troon kindly sent the strokesaver course guide with the changes for this years open and green details so really its the same course but the little changes of each hole to be exactly right is taking me ages.
